I WROTE BACK to the inmate who felt inspired by my article and made a donation to the tornado recovery effort in Sussex County. Here’s what I had to say:

Thank you for your letter. Despite riding out other storms and seeing the aftermath of various tragedies over the years, the widespread damage earlier this year was the worst I’d ever seen in person. When I returned to the newsroom, I hoped to display that they shouldn’t be forgotten — their frustration and despair did not end when the cameras and volunteers moved on to the next event. I am glad to hear that sharing their stories led to action during the time they need it most.

I have forwarded your letter to my editors in the hope that your contribution to the long road to recovery in Sussex County receives further notice. I sometimes tell the people I’ve interviewed the following: Although your actions were made not because you wanted to be commended, sharing your deeds will inspire others to continue that good.

Looking for ways to help and working on writing are tasks that cannot be completed, but that is what makes them rewarding. Keep at both.
